Elaine Surick Oran ’66 has been chosen to receive an honorary doctor of sciences degree from the University of Leeds. The university’s honorary degrees are awarded to individuals who have “changed the landscape of their chosen fields.”
Oran, currently a visiting professor at Leeds, is a senior scientist at the U.S. Naval Research Lab, where she leads a team that pioneered the numerical simulation of complicated and dynamic fluid flows. The technique is applied to help scientists understand phenomena as diverse as movements of fish and birds, torpedo launches from submarines, large-scale fires in cities and forests, solar eruptions, and explosions of supernovae.
