The New York Times has named This Republic of Suffering: Death and the American Civil War, by Drew Gilpin Faust ’68, one of the 10 best books of 2008. Faust, a historian who in 2007 became the first woman to assume the presidency of Harvard University, has published six books on topics relating to the U.S. Civil War and the antebellum South. The first chapter of Republic of Suffering is available on the Times‘s Web site.
